August is a terrific time to kayak the southern California cost. On our trip we saw lots and lots of California sea lions. The La Jolla caves are quite fun to paddle through. Just watch out for all of the swimmers in the water.
We used La Jolla Sea Caves Kayaks (http://www.lajollaseacavekayaks.com/) for our tour. They do a great job limiting the tours to a small group. A lot of other outfitters have huge flotillas of kayaks on the water.
