You don't know the trumpet player, Derek Watkins? Well, he actually is a rare breed: First: He can't' be beat by anyone playing Lead Trumpet. Second: He can play Jazz Trumpet as good or better than most professional 2nd chair players and first call jazz trumpeters. Third: He is the Ultimate High Note Artist and whether he knew it or not, plays in the Maynard Ferguson Style.
Still there is one more thing...the biggest thing that sets him apart: TONE & SOUND!
Yes, other players can play high, lead, jazz, etc, but MOST don't have this awesome thick, lush, full brassy sound. Bill Chase had it, Maynard Ferguson had it. Unfortunately, most of the top call A list session players in L.A. and New York DON'T have it.
In fact, notice some of these current popular studio trumpet players. Did it ever occur to you they sound a lot like a software plug in? Their tone is so thin and so devoid of brass it could be the stroke of a key on a synth. Don't know why this is, but it is what it is.
Derek Watkins was amazing, but as you check out his other recordings one thing surely will come up in your mind over and over again: HE HAS THE SOUND THAT WE ALL WANT AND MOST DON'T EVERY GET!
