Diving the Revillagigedo Islands is a world-class, liveaboard-only experience known for spectacular and intimate encounters with large pelagic marine life, earning it the nickname the "Mexican Galapagos". Located in the remote Pacific Ocean, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is an adrenaline-fueled adventure for experienced divers who thrive in open water with strong currents.
Topography and marine life
Volcanic landscape: The archipelago's four uninhabited islands—Socorro, San Benedicto, Roca Partida, and Clarion—are the peaks of a submerged volcanic mountain range. The dramatic underwater landscape consists of steep walls, arches, pinnacles, lava flows, and isolated rock outcroppings.
Abundant megafauna: The convergence of nutrient-rich currents attracts an incredible concentration of large marine animals, often resulting in unforgettable, up-close interactions with divers.
Giant manta rays: The archipelago is famous for its large aggregation of giant oceanic manta rays. They are known for their curiosity, frequently approaching divers to interact with them or to enjoy the feeling of their exhaled bubbles.
Sharks: Revillagigedo is a shark enthusiast's dream, with numerous species making regular appearances. Divers can see schooling scalloped hammerheads, silky sharks, Galapagos sharks, silvertips, white tips, and occasionally, tiger sharks.
Dolphins: Playful bottlenose dolphins are known to seek out divers for social interaction, particularly at sites like Cabo Pearce and Punta Tosca on Socorro Island.
Whales: From January to April, migrating humpback whales arrive to breed and calve. Divers can often hear their songs during dives and, with luck, witness these majestic animals underwater.
Other pelagics: The nutrient-rich waters also attract whale sharks, large schools of tuna, yellowfin, and other jacks, which create spectacular hunting displays.
The diving experience
Remote and rugged: Located 24–36 hours by boat from the Mexican mainland, the islands are remote and exposed, resulting in open ocean conditions with strong currents and sometimes choppy surface swells and deep dive sites,for experienced divers only.
