Kiyomizu-dera, located in Higashiyama, Kyoto, is one of Japan's most famous ancient temples. It was founded in 778 AD and is dedicated to Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy. The temple's name, "Kiyomizu" (meaning "pure water"), comes from the Otowa Waterfall that flows behind the temple, symbolizing purity and the fulfillment of wishes.
Its most iconic structure is the “Kiyomizu Stage,” a large wooden terrace built without the use of a single nail, supported by 139 tall wooden pillars. It offers panoramic views of Kyoto and its seasonal scenery—cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant foliage in autumn—making it a popular spot for photography and tourism.
Within the grounds is also the Jishu Shrine, known for blessings in love and relationships, as well as the Otowa Waterfall, where visitors drink from three streams for different blessings. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kiyomizu-dera embodies the essence of Japanese Buddhist architecture and spiritual culture, harmoniously blending nature and tradition.
