If you manage to get five bubbles in all three of your given Disciplines before you bring the sarcophagus back to LaCroix and talk to Beckett, he teaches you Protean; unless you're a Gangrel, in which case he teaches you Celerity.
This game is stingy with experience points, but you do get some leeway for putting points into things other than your Disciplines even if you don't do every single sidequest up to the Giovanni Mansion.
