While much of the world speaks Indo-European languages, over 200 million people in South India speak something entirely different – Dravidian languages.
These languages form one of the oldest and most resilient language families on Earth, with roots possibly older than Sanskrit. Tamil, for instance, has a literary tradition that stretches back over 2,000 years and is still spoken and written today in nearly its classical form.
