The Readers Digest Festival of Popular Songs' Songbook says:
“How are you going to keep them down the farm?“ Was written in 1919, year following the armistice that ended World War I. The idea of doughboys having such a good time in Gay Paree that they would never again settle for the drudgery of Farmlife presaged the overall change in moral standards that followed the war and turned the 1920s into “The Jazz Age“. The songs composer, Walter Donaldson, went on to write “My Blue Heaven“, “Carolina in the Morning“, “My Blue Heaven“, “Love Me or Leave Me“, “Yes Sir, That’s my Baby“, and many others.
