Recorded on my iPhone 13 Pro, here's a concert reel containing samples of Grand Ole Opry chanteuse Mandy Barnett performing Elvis Presley's "(Now and Then There's) A Fool Such As I," her 1996 C&W hit "Now That's All Right with Me," Jeannie C. Riley's "Harper Valley P.T.A." (written by Tom T. Hall), and the jazz chestnut "(Won't You Come Home) Bill Bailey" onstage during a blustery Alapaha Station Celebration in Alapaha, Georgia, on November 11, 2023. Guitar accompaniment is by lead picker Andy Reiss of the Time Jumpers (on the left) and Opry staff band musician Garrett Stoner. Impromptu dancing courtesy of Norma Moore Gaskins and baby sister Joan Moore Drawdy.
"Now That's All Right with Me" can be found on Barnett's 1996 debut self-titled record for Asylum. "A Fool Such As I" was covered on 2020's "A Nashville Songbook." "Bill Bailey" enhanced 2011's "Sweet Dreams," Barnett's full-blown album of reimagined Patsy Cline hits. So far "Harper Valley P.T.A." has yet to find a home on a Barnett studio LP.
I was privileged to conduct a wide-ranging interview after Barnett's Alapaha show entitled "Opry Darling Mandy Barnett Embraces Versatility Despite Being Born in Wrong Era" on Medium which I hope you'll investigate.
