The main building of the museum is the Deng Clan Ancestral Hall, constructed during the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty. It is a classic Lingnan-style "grey brick wok-ear" building.

Deng Shichang was the captain of the Chinese cruiser Zhiyuan in the Beiyang Fleet and was a native of Panyu, Guangdong (now part of Guangzhou). The museum uses historical photographs, document reproductions, ship models, and other exhibits to detail Deng Shichang's life, the historical context of the war, and the heroic final charge of the Zhiyuan. The displays convey a strong theme of patriotism. The museum grounds are quiet and shaded by old trees. In addition to the main exhibition halls, parts of the original ancestral hall layout and decorations are preserved, giving the site value for both historical education and appreciation of traditional architecture.
