How to Make Gold Wire from a Gold Ingot

In this week’s vlog, we’re getting hands-on at the bench as I take solid gold ingots and begin the process of transforming them into 18-gauge wire, ready to be woven into something beautiful.
It starts with the torch. I anneal the gold to soften it, then roll it out gradually using my Durston rolling mill. Heat, roll, repeat. Each pass shapes the metal into long, narrow strips.
Next, I pull the gold through a series of holes in a draw plate, reducing the wire size step by step. I continue annealing between each pull to keep the gold soft and workable. Eventually, that heavy ingot becomes a smooth, even wire, perfect for creating detailed pieces.
This is the kind of work that builds the foundation for every handcrafted design we make.
Thanks for watching.
