This week on the channel, I sat down with Uma Rose, and this conversation cuts deep into what it actually means to break a cycle of addiction.
Uma grew up with both parents struggling with addiction, a childhood marked by instability, spiritual practices she wasn’t old enough to understand, and trauma she had to make sense of far too young. Uma Rose speaks openly about how those early experiences shaped her relationships as well as her relationships with psychedelics, weed, alcohol and other substances.
Her story shows how you can grow up inside addiction, be marred by trauma, try to outrun it and still find yourself repeating patterns you never wanted. From running away to a farm searching for peace, to falling deeper into substances, to the moment she thought she was being watched 24/7.
Uma also beautifully explains her harmful relationship with weed and the nuance we rarely hear: that the same substance some people find helpful can be profoundly harmful for others.
Uma also unpacks what it was like watching her father get sober while she spiralled into her addiction and the complicated emotions that came with that.
What makes this conversation powerful is the way Uma shares it: with clarity, honesty, and no need to make herself look perfect. It’s a two-hour discussion about trauma, survival, psychosis, family, and the long, non-linear journey of choosing something different for yourself. And how recovery can bring family together and heal wounds once thought impossible to heal.
If you or someone you love is struggling, there are free and varied resources in my bio when you’re ready. I love you fam.
