Dear Prudence was written in March of 1968 about Prudence Farrow, the sister of actress Mia Farrow, while studying with the Maharishi. Farrow, who had become obsessed with meditating, secluded herself in her room for weeks on end and would often be either coaxed out or visited often by various members of the group in an attempt to wake her from her trance.
The first time Dear Prudence was put to tape was as a demo on May 29, 1968 at Harrison's house, Kinfauns. This recording and others written during their stay in India would make up what are now known as the Esher demos.
The song would remain untouched until August 28th, 1968. Starr had recently quit the band so the other three Beatles gathered at Trident Studios at around 5 pm to begin work. Dear Prudence was recorded using an 8-track machine. having access to this technology meant that the song could be recorded track by track, an innumerable amount of times until it was perfect. The recording process is not one I'm going to get into here as it is too involved.
McCartney overdubbed his bass track with his 1966-67 Fender Jazz Bass on August 29th onto track 5 along with lennon's tambourine. His bass part fatures a very distinct descending chromatic line very similar to that in Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds. This highlights the core harmonic idea of the progression. In this case, the song stays in D Major but the bass begins on the V then goes up to the I, then the VII, then the vii, then to the vi...each time sliding back down to the I. Its a great example of a chromatic walk-down.
Thats about it!
