Serviceberry is a relatively small tree that brings a ton of benefits to a landscape. There are different species and hybrids of serviceberry, most of which are native to North America. Many serviceberries have spring flowers, edible fruit and rich autumn color so they provide year-round interest. One great example is the serviceberry Autumn Brilliance, which grows to about 20 feet tall.
The fruit of the serviceberry is one of the plant’s best features and is somewhat of a delicacy for both wildlife and people. If you're fast enough to beat the birds, squirrels and deer to harvest the fruit, it makes good jams and pies.
Serviceberry is hardy from zones 4 through 9. It can tolerate partial shade or full sun and many types of terrain and soil conditions. Avoid planting them in clay or poorly drained soil, or else phytophthora could be a real concern. Other common issues include powdery mildew, rust, aphids and mites.
However, these concerns are manageable and do not outweigh all the benefits that serviceberry can bring to your landscape.
