The barrage of 96 missiles fired over Ukraine on Tuesday was Russia's largest airstrike of the war so far. But that follows months of assertions by Western and Ukrainian officials that Moscow's stockpile of missiles and other weapons is fast dwindling.
Ukraine's defense minister, Oleksii Reznikov, said last month that Russia had burned nearly 70% of the pre-war missile types mostly used in Tuesday's attack: Iskander, Kalibr, and air-launched cruise missiles. At the time, Reznikov said Russia had only 609 missiles remaining, although neither figure could be independently verified.
The swarms of Iranian-made drones striking Ukraine primarily, the long-range Shahed series that can carry an 88-pound warhead and hit targets in a kamikaze attack have become Russia's newest weapon in the conflict.
This month, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force Command said Iran was also expected to send ballistic missiles to Russia. Spokesman Yurii Ihnat said it was not known how many missiles Tehran might provide Moscow, but he added that the weapons likely to be delivered would be produced, with a range of about 300 kilometers to 700 kilometers 185 miles to 435 miles.
