A video showing how the hookshot works, made for a school project.
(This is based on a lot of research I did. The only thing Nintendo canonically said about the mechanic is that "it uses a spring". There is no mechanism described for pulling in the cable after shooting. There are lots of reasons why this wouldn't work in real life, but who cares, it's still an awesome game.)
