Axel Vervoordt Gallery is pleased to announce the representation of Chinese artist Shi Zhiying (born 1979 in Shanghai). Currently, Shi Zhiying is participating in the group exhibition "Breath and Crystal" at the gallery's Hong Kong space, curated by Dr. Shen Qilan. The gallery will showcase her recent works at the upcoming Shanghai West Bund Art & Design Fair, Art Basel in Hong Kong (2025), and host her first solo exhibition in Europe in June 2025 at Kanaal in Belgium.
Exploring the essence and language of painting has always been the focus of Shi Zhiying’s practice over the years. Drawing inspiration from both Eastern and Western art history, she adeptly captures the life-movement of the spirit through the rhythm of things and the inner logic of breath emphasised in Chinese painting through the language of oil painting, utilising colour, texture, and brushstrokes. Whether depicting the sea, sand, and grass with monochromatic brushstrokes in her early works, or exploring subjects like stones, figures of Buddha, and landscapes with richer colours in her recent creations, she portrays the form of objects with refined language based on the imitation of nature, expressing the nature of things.
