Quantum computing is a revolutionary approach to information processing based on the peculiar laws of physics that occur at the quantum scale of molecules, atoms and electrons. Many of today’s technologies that leverage quantum effects have their roots in NSF investments. We’ll explore how quantum science is beginning to deliver real-world benefits in the U.S. National Science Foundation’s “Discovery Files”.
“I think for people to fully appreciate the power of quantum computers and to accelerate their use in different fields, people should be learning the fundamentals of quantum even at a young age.”
Chris Monroe is a professor at Duke University and co-founder of IonQ, the first publicly traded quantum computing company. Contributions from NSF-supported researchers are fueling new technologies such as the quantum dots used in TV screens, advanced lasers and a growing list of innovations as we harness the power of quantum mechanics to benefit society.
Bold partnerships with industry to share data, tools and expertise are advancing quantum computers that will help tackle complex problems that are beyond the capabilities of even the most powerful supercomputers of today while building the quantum powered workforce of tomorrow.
“The industrial play in quantum these days is largely driving the field now. It's a wonderful confluence of fundamental physics and very applied engineering and real devices of the future.”
