Exploring the Legendary Orrie Baragwanath Pass
Join me on a rugged 4x4 journey through the heart of the Lekgalameetse Nature Reserve in the Northern Drakensberg. This video captures our traverse of the historic Orrie Baragwanath Pass, a route renowned for its technical challenges and breathtaking escarpment views.
📍 The Route
Our adventure began in the rural village of Fertilis (near Ga-Mafefe), heading east toward the mountains. We entered the reserve via the South Gate (often referred to locally as the Mafefe or West Gate), which immediately plunges you into the unpaved, "wild" side of the pass.
The ascent from the west is steep and rocky, requiring high clearance and low range. As we reached the summit, we crossed the high-altitude grasslands of "The Downs"—an area once farmed by the legendary "Copper King" himself, Orlando (Orrie) Baragwanath. We then descended the paved eastern switchbacks, exiting through the Main Gate near Trichardtsdal/Ofcolaco.
