This is the second part of our little drum tuning tutorial. Last week you learned the absolute basics ( • Drum Tuning Tutorial (Part 1) - How To Eve... ): putting on a drumhead, finger tightening and leveling it and finally how to even it out and get both drumheads to the same pitch. I hope you feel comfortable doing that by now.
The next step is to find out how a higher or lower bottom head will affect the sound of our drums. We will determine the overall characteristics (things like sustain, projection, attack and pitchbend) and the most common applications for both tunings. I’ll also give you some tips on how to find the perfect relationship between both drumheads by using your ears, since drum tuning gadgets or tuning to specific intervals simply won’t provide you with the extra 10 percent sound you might be looking for.
