Within mainland France is an often forgotten volcano which one day is quite likely to erupt again. This volcano was documented by early humans who made a cave painting of an eruption they witnessed 36,000 years ago. Known as Bas-Vivarais, this currently dormant volcano is located in southeastern France and last erupted 15,000 years ago.
Thumbnail Photo Credit: Google Earth. This image was overlaid with text, overlaid with an orange dotted circular outline of the maar crater rim, and then overlaid with GeologyHub made graphics (the image border & the GeologyHub logo).
Correction: The cave painting attribution is missing one bit of information. I wish to add that the cave painting image was taken by D. Genty (figure 3B in source [1] which I have listed below). The image is licensed under the CC BY 4.0 license.
