【秋田／日本100名城】久保田城／佐竹義宣が築いた出羽の名城 - Kubota Castle in AKITA, JAPAN / The top 100 Castles in Japan/No.9 -

久保田城は、秋田県秋田市にある城。千秋公園（久保田城跡）として秋田市指定名勝に指定されています。慶長7年(1602年）関ヶ原の合戦後、常陸54万石から出羽20万石に転封された佐竹義宣は、現在の場所に新たに城を築き城下町を整備しました。以来今日まで、秋田市はこの城下町を中心として発展してきました。
久保田城は、旭川の左岸にある神明山（標高40メートル）に築かれた平山城。石垣は基底部に僅かにあるのみで、その上に土塁を盛り、天守は持たず櫓座敷をその代わりとしました。天守を造らなかったのは、財政事情や幕府への軍役奉仕、幕府への遠慮などが理由と云われます。その後、佐竹氏は12代続いて明治維新を迎えます。
残念ながら、1880年（明治13年）の大火で御物頭御番所以外の本丸建物はほとんどが焼失。近年になり、御隅櫓と表門などが復元され、平成18年（2006年）日本100名城の第9番に選定されました。現在、久保田城跡は千秋公園として整備され、市民の憩いの場として親しまれています。

Kubota castle is located in Akita City, Akita Prefecture. It is designated as a scenic beauty spot by Akita City as Senshu Park (Ruins of Kubota Castle). In 1602, after the Battle of Sekigahara, Yoshinobu Satake was transferred from 540,000 koku of Hitachi province to 200,000 koku of Dewa province, and built a new castle on the present site and developed the castle town. Since then, Akita City has continued to develop around this castle town.
Kubota Castle is a flat mountain castle built on Mt. Shinmeizan (40 meters above sea level) on the left bank of the Asahikawa River.
There is only a small amount of stone wall at the base, and the earthworks are piled up on it, and there is no castle tower, and the turret room is used instead. It is said that the reason for not building a castle tower was due to the financial situation, military service to the Shogunate, and discretion toward the Shogunate. The Satake clan continued for 12 generations until the Meiji Restoration.
Unfortunately, most of the buildings in the main building were destroyed by fire in 1880, except for the Guard station. In recent years, the Osumi Yagura and the front gate were restored, and in 2006, the castle was selected as No. 9 on the list of The top 100 castles in Japan. Currently, the ruins of Kubota Castle have been maintained as Senshu Park and are popular as a place of relaxation for the citizens.
