The Execution Of The Beast Of Nanking - General Iwane Matsui

Some of the worst war crimes of the Second World War were conducted by the Japanese Army. They had been at war for years before they joined the conflict, and they had caused horror and chaos across Asia and in particular in China in cities such as Nanking. One man who controlled forces in Nanking was General Iwane Matsui, who brutally oversaw the atrocities and massacre of Nanking. It's believed that inside of the city up to 100,000 civilians were slaughtered by the Japanese forces.

Iwane Matsui was an old man when he was brought to his war crimes trial, and he was sentenced to death for his crimes. He was acquitted of many charges but the one that the judges could not ignore related to Nanking, and for this he was executed inside the courtyard of Sugamo Prison along with other war criminals on a gallows.
