In this video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy demonstrates how to create a color chart for your torch fired enamel projects.

The nature of enamel materials makes it impossible to blend them to create color variations. The opaque and transparent colors have to be layered on top of one another to develop various shades and hues. And, you don't want to experiment on a piece that you are working to finish to find the right color combination.

The enamel color chart is similar to one used by watercolorists. It uses all of the colors in your enameling kit to provide you with a hint of what you can expect to see on your piece after it is fired. This simple tool can prevent you from making serious mistakes on a piece. And, it might inspire you to try color combinations that you might not have considered otherwise.

Be sure to work on a thick piece of copper sheet so that you don't have to counter enamel (enamel the back side) of the color chart. And, don't forget to write down the names and corresponding numbers for each of the colors for future reference.
