Vintage railway footage at Cheddleton | 1977 | Class 25 Sulzer | Churnet Valley Railway | cab ride

Witness sand trains to and from British Industrial Sand, Oakamoor to Pilkington Glass, St Helen’s as they pass through Cheddleton station on the Churnet Valley railway line in 1977.

The main footage at Cheddleton is filmed from the road crossing outside the station. In addition cab ride footage shows a loaded sand train approaching Cheddleton and continuing on its journey to Leek Brook Junction.

This vintage footage captures a typical British Rail freight operation in the 1970s transporting sand hoppers from Oakamoor Sidings to the Pilkington Glass Works in St. Helens. Filmed in super 8 cine film without sound I’ve added a sound recording made from the cab of 24057 on a different journey from Oakamoor to Leek Brook. Sorry the sound is not in sync with the video but it hopefully gives a feel for the atmosphere in the cab and outside the engine.

Cheddleton station and rail yard is an historic North Staffordshire Railway station site saved from demolition now owned and being developed by the Churnet Valley Railway. The Cheddleton site has changed dramatically over the years - back on 1977 it had little more than a short siding that was not connected to the main line! The engine shed didn’t exist at the time and was built in the late 1970s / early 1980s.
