If you own a vehicle with direct injection and you care about the car's performance, do not wait 100,000 miles to have the intake valves and ports carbon-cleaned. You'll start to see a drop in performance in as little as 10,000 miles.
While Audi has made improvements in their later direct-injected vehicles, they're not immune. Audi has finally introduced a combination direct and port-injected system on many of their vehicles including the second generation R8, RS3, TTRS and the new B9 RS5 amongst others. The rest of us will have to deal with the issue directly.
