This is the studio version of "Coming Up" that was released from "McCartney II" and was Side A of the single. The B Side was a rousing live rendition that was recorded at the Glasgow Apollo in Scotland on December 17, 1979 as a filler track along with a weirdy tune Lunch Box/Odd Sox. When the single was sent to radio stations, the label was promoting the A side but DJ's preferred the electrifying live performance and that side became a #1 and stayed there for three weeks in June of 1980. The video has McCartney portraying Buddy Holly, Ron Mael(of Sparks), Frank Zappa, Andy MacKay of Roxy Music and a 60's incarnation of himself as Beatle Paul. McCartney has an affinity for Buddy Holly's music and arranged for a Buddy Holly weeklong Music Festival to be celebrated on his birthday during the week of the 7th of September. McCartney played all the instruments on this studio version in addition to singing lead. Linda fills in with some "Coming Up" chants. I figured you all have already heard the hit version and I got some basic music tracks and came up with this one. That live version was an excellent driving tune, as inspiring as Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now" but with a butt kicking high voltage performance that made you roll the windows down and celebrate the coming warm weather on a sunny day...yeah that one got played loud in my 1975 tawny gold Chevrolet Malibu Classic. That car was a wonder on wheels, I mean it was easy to hit 130kms an hour and not notice, the ride was that smooth. I loved that car, I bought it used and my mechanic uncle looked it over and gave his approval. The car was five years old when I got it in great shape.
