Mooring operation is one of the important tasks that seafarers have to perform on ship’s deck. Technically, the operation may seem simple but there are several dangerous associated with it

Mooring is a procedure to anchor the ship to a fixed or floating element and keep it connected during loading or unloading operations. Safe mooring must withstand several forces, such as wind, the current, the tide and waves.

When opting for the mooring line keep in mind the:

Weight and diameter of the line in comparison to required strength.
Elasticity of the material.
Durability including resistance to high temperature, strong sunlight or chemicals.
Whether the lines will float or not.
Required maintenance including method and ease of repair.
Availability of replacement lines in vessels expected trading area.

The toolbox meeting is a crucial step, not to be avoided, as those participating will in detail analyze the plan, the potential challenges and what mitigation measures will be followed.

Moreover, the meeting will provide safety instructions for those who will conduct the operations, so in case of emergency they will be able to handle the situation, and highlight that all mooring area is a snap-back hazardous area, meaning that all crew should be extra cautious during mooring.

A tug, or more commonly a tugboat, is a secondary boat which helps in the mooring or berthing operation of a ship by either towing or pushing a vessel towards the port.

A tug is a special class of boat without which mega-ships cannot get into a port. Along with the primary purpose of towing the vessel towards the harbour, tug boats can be engaged to provide essentials, such as water, air, etc., to the vessel.
