This video is inspired by the Jonathan Glazer's film "The Zone of Interest". It's a chilling monologue from Rudolf Höss, revealing the horrifying disconnect between duty and humanity. He was captured, tried for his crimes, and hanged near Auschwitz in 1947.
"I sip my coffee. My wife tends to the garden. My children laugh, playing in the sunshine. Our home is perfect—right next to my work.
I am Rudolf Höss, commandant of Auschwitz.
The gate opens. They shuffle in, eyes empty, unaware. I stand, cold and calm, by the door.
I give the order. The door shuts. The gas starts.
I watch through the glass. Silence follows.
Do I ever hear the screams? Smell the burning? No. That is not my concern. I did my duty."
