🥔 How to Grow Potatoes in Small Containers
🌱 What You’ll Need
Seed potatoes (not grocery store potatoes—look for certified disease-free varieties)

Container (minimum 10–15 litres; buckets, grow bags, or deep pots work well)

Potting mix (loamy, well-draining soil with compost)

Watering can or hose

Sunny spot (6–8 hours of sunlight daily)

🧑‍🌾 Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare the Seed Potatoes
Cut large seed potatoes into chunks with at least one or two “eyes” (sprouting points).

Let them dry for 24–48 hours to prevent rotting.

2. Choose and Prep Your Container
Ensure it has drainage holes at the bottom.

Fill the bottom third with potting mix.

3. Plant the Potatoes
Place 2–3 seed potato pieces on the soil surface, eyes facing up.

Cover with 10–15 cm of soil.

4. Water and Wait
Keep the soil evenly moist, not soggy.

Shoots will appear in 2–3 weeks.

5. Hill the Potatoes
As plants grow to about 15 cm tall, add more soil to cover the stems, leaving the top leaves exposed.

Repeat every time the plants grow another 15 cm, until the container is nearly full.

6. Care and Maintenance
Water regularly—potatoes need consistent moisture.

Feed with a balanced fertilizer every few weeks if desired.

7. Harvest Time
After flowering, wait for the foliage to yellow and die back.

Tip the container over and dig out your potatoes!

Use early or dwarf varieties for better results in small spaces.

Avoid overwatering—containers dry out faster but can also become waterlogged.

Rotate crops yearly if reusing soil to prevent disease buildup.
