In this detailed lecture, Safeer Sir explains Émile Durkheim’s Theory of Division of Labour, one of the most fundamental concepts in sociology.
Durkheim’s question was simple yet profound — “What holds modern societies together when people are so different?”
Through this theory, he gave a scientific and functionalist explanation of how specialization, interdependence, and cooperation maintain social order in complex societies.
📘 What You’ll Learn in This Lecture
✅ 1️⃣ Introduction to Durkheim’s Perspective
Understand how Durkheim’s approach differed from Marx — while Marx emphasized conflict and alienation, Durkheim focused on integration and harmony.
His key concern: How social order is maintained in modern, industrial societies.
✅ 2️⃣ Context and Origin
Durkheim wrote during late 19th century France, a period of rapid industrialization and social transformation.
He observed that as people grew more specialized, traditional similarities declined — yet societies continued to function cohesively.
✅ 3️⃣ Definition of Division of Labour
Division of labour means the specialization of tasks and roles among individuals.
Durkheim redefined it as a social fact — not merely an economic phenomenon, but a moral and social force that binds society together.
✅ 4️⃣ Cause of Division of Labour
Durkheim argued that it arises due to increase in population and interaction — what he called moral density.
With growing competition, individuals specialize to survive, leading to new forms of cooperation and interdependence.
“The cause of division of labour is not economic necessity, but moral and social pressure.” — Durkheim
✅ 5️⃣ Function of Division of Labour
In traditional societies, unity came from similarity — Mechanical Solidarity.
In modern societies, unity arises from interdependence — Organic Solidarity.
Each individual performs a unique function, yet all depend on one another — just like organs in a human body.
“We seek in others what we lack in ourselves.” — Durkheim
✅ 6️⃣ Comparison with Karl Marx
Durkheim: Division of labour = Integration & Freedom.
Marx: Division of labour = Alienation & Exploitation.
Durkheim’s lens is functionalist, while Marx’s is conflictual.
✅ 7️⃣ Pathological (Abnormal) Forms
Durkheim identified three abnormal forms where division of labour fails to integrate society:
Anomic Division of Labour – Normlessness, moral confusion.
Forced Division of Labour – Mismatch between talent and occupation.
Inadequate Organization – Poor coordination of roles and functions.
✅ 8️⃣ Ethical Division of Labour – Durkheim’s Solution
Durkheim believed these issues can be solved through occupational associations that enforce ethical codes and restore cooperation — a system he called Ethical Socialism.
✅ 9️⃣ Relevance for UPSC & Modern Society
Durkheim’s theory remains relevant for explaining:
Professional ethics and regulation,
Industrial relations and work discipline,
Moral integration in diverse, modern societies.
