In this video, we will be studying the material makeup of each essential oil and will be referring to what is called a “datasheet.” In fact, you have already looked at several of these during the “Now Smell This” activities. You will notice these datasheets are laden with pertinent information. This information will become very useful throughout this course and you will find it helpful to refer back to these from time to time throughout this course and when creating blends for clients.
At first glance, a datasheet may seem a bit intimidating or even overwhelming. But, rest assured it will all begin to make sense and you will find this information useful in a very practical way.
Each essential oil’s datasheet follows the same format:
Common Name Name the plant is generally known by.
Latin Name This is the specific name of the plant given by botanists. Its Latin name is necessary, since there are several plants known by the same common name. For example, there are two kinds of Chamomile in this class, Matricaria recutita and Chamaemelum nobile.
Botanical Family Because there is literally millions of different plants on our planet and botanists are cataloging and tracking each plant. Since many plants have similar physical characteristics, they made a broad category called, “Plant Family.”
Countries of Origin: This is where the essential oil particular plant originated (grown). In some cases, more than one country may be listed when several countries produce the essential oil of this particular plant.
Plant Part Used: Essential oils come from different parts of plants (flower, seed, root, leaf, etc.). This information is relevant when blending by botany.
Extraction Method: There are several ways to extract essential oil from its plant. Knowing the extraction method is important in understanding the chemistry of an oil.
Aroma: In blending, it is helpful to have a general description of the scent of the essential oil.
Note: Perfumers sometimes describe fragrances as “notes” which are determined by the volatility (evaporation rate) of an oil. Highly volatile oils are called top notes. Knowing the note is important when blending for aroma.
Chemical Families*: Essential oils are made up of thousands of different chemicals. Chemists organize the myriad of chemical components into families to help keep track of them. The various families have different therapeutic properties and safety concerns. Notes on Chemical Families. Any interesting details about the chemical families for the oil in question.
Safety Data: All relevant safety information.
Blending Ideas: Everyone can use a few good recipes to get started! You’ll find effective recipes for a wide range of health issues here.
Emotional/Energetic Qualities: Each oil has an energetic and emotional impact.
Therapeutic Properties: The therapeutic properties associated with the specific essential oil. Useful for blending!
Clinical Applications: Here is the place to note information about the use of the oil.
As you read the safety section of the datasheets this little chart might help.
1% = 6 drops per 1 oz/30ml
0.9% = 5.4 d
0.8% = 4.8 d
0.7% = 4.2 d
0.6% = 3.6 d
0.5% = 3 d
0.4% = 2.4 d
0.3% = 1.8 d
0.2% = 1.2 d
0.1% = 0.6 d
** On each essential oil datasheet there is the “chemical family box.” This box tells you the percentage of each chemical family in that oil. This information can vary in each batch of oil.
When you buy your oils from some essential oil companies, you may request or receive a GC/MS report that matches your specific oil. In this report, you will be able to see the specific amounts and percentages of each chemical constituent it contains.
