Composer Toivo Kuula (1888-1918, Finland) grew up in a troubled Finland under Russian rule. He was a fierce supporter of Finnish independence. Kuula studied with his contemporary Jean Sibelius and composed vocal choral pieces as well as works for piano, violin, and for orchestra. Kuula is known for his colourful and passionate pieces that portray Finnish people and nature.
Iltatunnelma, which translates as ‘evening atmosphere’, is part of Opus 27b - a collection of songs for male choir. The work, which has been rarely performed, sings of silence. Silence takes many forms, from serene silence to bleak silence. The silence that Kuula's Iltatunnelma creates is a silence with a dark sound, surrounded by a golden edge of comfort.
