Latest: Suspect arrested after 2 East Cleveland officers wounded, 2 people killed in incident

A suspect wanted in connection with the shootings of two East Cleveland police officers late Thursday night has been arrested, officials confirmed Friday morning. Authorities also say two other people were killed in the incident.

During a press conference, Mayor Lateek Shabazz said the situation began around 11 p.m. Thursday as a family dispute.

East Cleveland Police Officer Joshua Durda responded to the area of North Taylor Road to investigate and was shot in the leg. He was taken to University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and is expected to be OK.

Officials then noted that two people were found shot inside the same home and did not survive.

More than an hour later, a second officer — Brandon Hernandez, who was responding to a ShotSpotter alert from the suspect — was shot on Euclid Avenue when the suspect reportedly fired from cover.

“East Cleveland stands in unwavering support of two of its own, Officer Hernandez and Officer Durda, who were injured in the line of duty. Both officers sustained gunshot wounds during the incident currently under investigation,” said East Cleveland’s police chief, Reginald Holcomb.
