On the 1st of April 1974 the historic county of Cumberland, along with neighbouring Westmorland and small sections of two other counties, was absorbed into a brand new entity - the ceremonial county of Cumbria. But why? Join me for a tour of one of England's 'lost' counties (although it's not strictly lost owing to a recent development which I'll also explain), famed for its mountains, lakes, industrial coastline and much more besides.
