For this installment of the Under the Influence video series, Artforum asked Howardena Pindell about her favorite artworks, artists, and sources of inspiration. Here, she shares her love for Marcel Duchamp's work Why Not Sneeze, Rose Sélavy?, 1921, in the Philadelphia Art Museum’s collection; Eva Hesse’s sculptures, which she encountered upon first moving to New York in the 1960s; and the peers and teachers who encouraged and supported her as she faced both overt and covert racism in the United States. A favorite work of her own? Scapegoat, 1990, “This painting has premonitions in it."
