I have always loved the silence after the Amen. That sacred pause in which the people fall silent, the bells stop and the altar rests. It was Palm Sunday. The parish was full, as always. Simple people, familiar faces, green branches swaying in the wind like a mute choir of hope. I ended the homily talking about surrender, the cross and resurrection. He said, with conviction: “Whoever wants to follow me, take up his cross and come.” Little did I know that my cross was there, waiting for me, discreetly beating on my chest.
