The Arena was constructed in the early 1st century AD, during the reign of Emperor Augustus, and was initially located outside the city walls.
The Arena di Verona is a 1st-century AD Roman amphitheater, originally built to host gladiator fights and public spectacles for up to 30,000 spectators.
Its primary function was to stage public events, including gladiator battles, animal hunts, and processions, with a capacity for around 30,000 people.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Arena's external structure was damaged by an earthquake in 1117, leading to the use of its stones for other buildings.
The Arena became a quarry for building materials. King Theodoric used it to source stone for defensive walls.
