The film Sholay was distributed by its makers, Sippy Films, in Mumbai, Bengal, Hyderabad, and South territories. However, in the main Hindi film markets—Delhi, UP, Rajasthan, and Central Provinces—the distribution rights were bought by Rajshri, which by then had also become a production company and had produced several hit films. Tarachand Barjatiya, the owner of Rajshri, had his eyes on the film from the start. After the first preview, he decided that paying 22 lakh rupees per territory for Sholay was not a big amount and would be profitable deal. With Sholay's distribution rights, he earned profits for two decades while also continuing to produce his own films. After Sholay, he resolved that a mega movie like this should also be made under the Rajshri Productions banner.
