Walk With Me in New Zealand Central South Island / SleepyTownParadise
New Zealand is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. New Zealand's South Island is long and mountainous, with three prime tourist routes designated by location: the East Route, the West Route and the Central Route. The Central route goes from Christchurch to Queenstown via Tekapo, Mount Cook, and Wanaka, about 6 hours drive in total.
New Zealand's South Island is home to a scenic paradise - Lake Wanaka. Surrounded by verdant mountains, deep streams and lush forests, it is recognised as one of New Zealand's most scenic spots and a great holiday destination for all seasons.
The winter temperatures on New Zealand's South Island are relatively low and the snow in the mountains around Lake Wanaka are packed thick, making it a skier's paradise. The mountains here are home to some of New Zealand's top ski resorts, with Cardrona being one of the most popular in the country.
Cromwell is a small town on New Zealand's South Island which grew rapidly in 1862 as a result of the gold rush. It is surrounded by the Southern Alps and is relatively far from the ocean, making it the driest, hottest (and coldest) region in New Zealand. With a low population, low human pollution and mature irrigation systems, the town is a major producer of cherries, peach, apricots and other fruits. As such, it is commonly known as a fruit town.
Oamaru is the main port town in the southeast of New Zealand's South Island. Commonly known as the penguin town, Oamaru is not only home to New Zealand's famous blue penguins, as well as unique Victorian architecture, the famous Moeraki boulders, the Oamaru Historic District and other attractions. Oamaru is rich in white limestone and many early buildings were built from the local white stone. Once a lively Victorian gold rush town, Victorian style limestone buildings can still be seen everywhere. A stroll through the streets of Oamaru is a step back in time to the 19th century.
One of the best things to do in Oamaru is to watch penguins come ashore to return to their nest. Two different species of penguins can be seen in Oamaru, the blue penguin and the yellow-eyed penguin. The Blue Penguin Conservation Centre in Oamaru is home to a colony of blue penguins which build their nests in the bay area. At the Oamaru Blue Penguin Habitat, visitors can closely observe the world's smallest penguins. Every day at dusk, flocks of blue penguins gather offshore to wait for darkness. After the night turns dark, they swim under the stands on the shore, climb up the steep bank and cross the viewing area to return to their roost, where their mates or hungry young await.
The town's Harbour and Tyne streets are home to a collection of Victorian buildings built from local limestone between the 1860s and 1980s, giving the area a vintage and artistic atmosphere. Nowadays, Harbour Street is dotted with ice cream parlours, bakeries, galleries, bars, cafes, restaurants and other interesting shops, making it an interesting place to explore.
Located 40 kilometres south of Oamaru, Moeraki beach is home to a huge patch of rounded stones lying scattered on the beach. From a distance it looks like giant dinosaur eggs, a truly unique landscape.
The boulders were formed 65 million years ago, around charged particles of calcium and carbonate that crystallised over a period of four million years. The soft mud that encased the boulders emerged from the seabed some 15 million years ago, and was carved out one by one by the erosion of the waves and wind. These are the famous boulders of Moeraki.
Omarama is a short drive from Oamaru. Omarama means "land of light" in Maori and was named this because the starry night sky here is particularly pure and clear. Apart from admiring the beautiful night sky, there is also a favourite activity in Omarama -- the hot springs. Hot springs are an integral part of New Zealand culture. The hot springs here are all made from mountain spring water and each barrel is heated by its own heating system. Imagine soaking in a hot tub with an open view and the endless blue sky in front of you...... It's endlessly wonderful and addictive.
Tekapo is located in the middle of New Zealand's South Island, just a three hour drive southwest of Christchurch. Tekapo is a veritable 'tourist town' with just a few hundred residents, but many more visitors every day.
