Part 3 of my 4-part Mad River kayak camping series took an unexpected turn when a flash flood hit our campsite overnight. The river rose 4–5 feet while we slept on what we thought was a safe sandbar. If my paddling partner hadn’t woken me up early, I would’ve lost my kayak, paddle, and possibly everything else.
In this video, I break camp as the floodwaters rise around us and paddle the final leg through a swollen, fast-moving Mad River. It all ended safely — but it was close. This is the most intense section paddle I’ve done on this river.
