This is the B minor Prelude, BWV 869, the final prelude from Book I of The Well-Tempered Clavier by Johann Sebastian Bach.
It is one of the most suspension-saturated pieces in the repertoire: an almost unbroken chain of delayed resolutions, voice after voice, leaning and releasing in constant succession.
Slowing the music down reveals just how structural this is.
The suspensions stop feeling ornamental and start feeling like the condition the music lives inside, all unfolding over a stepwise bass line that keeps moving, sometimes supporting the upper voices, sometimes cutting directly against them.
Nothing here is rushed. Nothing is smoothed over. There’s nothing to follow except time.
