Video lecture for PHYS 130 at the University of Alberta. The telescope was invented around the same time as the microscope and within months revolutionized our understanding of the universe something which telescopes continue to do to this day. We will discuss the early history of the telescope, how a simple Keplerian telescope works and how to calculate its magnification factor. We will also discuss how the design of the telescope evolved and some of the more recent revelations telescopes have made possible.
