This week marks a big milestone for the homestead — the chickens and pigs are finally here.
We start things off with Kelly heading out to the highway on the mainland to meet the truck carrying six pigs and twenty-four chickens. Once they’re loaded up and back at the island, the real work begins.
First up, we get a crash course in setting up electric fencing for livestock — including a few lessons in what not to do. Once the pigs are secured and settling in, we head down to the garden to build a chicken run off the side of the coop Kelly and Gord built in last week’s episode.
After the animals are fed, fenced, and figuring things out, we shift focus back to the water. Our big work boat, the Cape Millie, is still tied up at Gord’s wharf and out of commission. We finally replace the starter that we pulled a few weeks ago, fire her back up, and make the run down the shore to get her tied off to a mooring ball in her usual spot in the lower harbour.
It’s been a full week — new life on the island, a few fixes, and plenty of lessons learned along the way. Thanks for following along as we keep building this life, one fence, one boat, and one muddy boot print at a time.
