Kāʻanapali Beach on Maui is a truly iconic Hawaiian destination. Here are some interesting facts and trivia about it:
Historical Significance:
It was once a retreat for Maui royalty.
It was also historically a warrior training ground.
Planned Resort:
Kāʻanapali was Hawaiʻi's first planned resort community, setting a precedent for resort development worldwide.
It was developed starting in 1959 by American Factors, Inc., (Amfac) and opened in 1962.
Beach Features:
It boasts three miles of beautiful white sand and clear water.
It has consistently been ranked among America's best beaches.
Black Rock (Puʻu Kekaʻa):
The northernmost cliffs of the beach, known as Puʻu Kekaʻa or Black Rock, are famous for the daily sunset cliff diving ceremony. This ceremony reenacts a feat performed by King Kahekili.
Black rock is also a very popular snorkeling and diving location.
Whalers Village:
Kāʻanapali is home to Whalers Village, an open-air shopping complex with various shops, restaurants, and a whaling museum.
