Hillary Juma of Mozilla Foundation presented the Common Voice project. This project aims at tackling a key barrier to the adoption of voice technologies: not all voices, languages, accents or dialects are equally understood by current technologies (e.g., Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri), making them less accessible to a considerable portion of the population. To partly fix this, the project collected the largest publicly available audio dataset (13,000 hours of voice recordings) in 76 languages. Collection of this dataset involved more than 200 developers and 393,000 volunteers around the world as the project was able to include as many as 76 languages by building and maintaining a community wherein everyone in the world can contribute. Underserved populations could now have better access to modern audio technologies. As just one example, Common Voice has allowed Rwandans to have a chatbot tool in their own language to spread information about the COVID-19 pandemic in a timely fashion.
