Everywhere we turn, someone is handing out advice on how to write a novel. Don't get me wrong, a lot of that advice is excellent, but there's one thing that doesn't get talked about enough. And that is The Art of Noticing! It's so important. We can read all the books on writing ever produced. Still, if we don't observe the quirks and idiosyncrasies of people around us, our characters are going to be pretty one-dimensional. The best part? Cultivating this practice is FUN. Keep a notebook with you, or use the Notes app on your phone. But start taking notice of things as you go about your day. You'll be surprised how many of those little observations might spark a story or make your writing richer!
