What is relativistic mass? What does it mean? Does mass actually increase with velocity?
These are the questions that I am going to answer in this video. We will look at the concept of mass-energy equivalence, relativistic momentum, relativistic energy, and how the relativistic mass term arises in all these expressions. I will show how this relativistic mass is related to what is known as rest mass (or invariant mass), and how it depends on velocity.
I will also derive the expression of this relativistic mass and rest mass and velocity. We will do that by looking at the elastic collision between two particles as observed by two different observers in relative motion. I will show how the velocity transformations and the conservation of linear momentum lead to this relativistic mass.
I will also show how we can use this to conclude that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light.
