Tanaya Fortune -- Thoughts From Your Unconscious Mind

Tanaya Fortune, a cadet with Cycle 34, recites lyrics she wrote for the Poetry contest held May 13, 2016. Cadets were required to incorporate lessons learned from the Lies That Bind curriculum, which helps cadets learn how to expose unconscious beliefs that lead to negative thinking.

NO DEMEANING OR OFFENSIVE COMMENTS WILL BE TOLERATED

"Run from your problems. Go ahead, run away.
But just remember, they'll be back again the next day.
Instead of being bitter, be optimistic instead; determined, adventurous, brave, even respected.
You're strong and capable, too. And how do I know?
Because I'm the voice that lives inside of you
I like to break you down. I like to leave you in tears.
And you created me during your formative years.
There is something wrong with you. Well that's what it seems.
You act hurt and rejected, and you know what I mean.
Go back to the way you were: Strong, appreciated, comfortable, sure.
Being different is unacceptable; well, in your eyes
When in reality, you're the one wearing a disguise.
Sure, being tense and bitter is a cute little front.
You should act worthy and important.
And I'm sorry to be so blunt; your personal safety is not important at all.
You went out with that girl again, but you didn't go to the mall
You were panicky and regretful, and now you feel like dirt
You put your guard down, when you should have been safe and alert.
Your future isn't important anymore; that is plain to see.
The only class you have an A in is music and all the rest are Ds.

What you used to have, but you changed your ways.
You love to scream that nobody cares,
But I do. I'm all ears
I listen to you every day and try to break you down in hopes that one day you'll finally turn around.
You're not bad or evil; you just got a bad start.
You're an amazing kid with an amazing heart.
Think before you act and you'll be okay.
Just remember we make life changing decisions every day.
Follow all orders given to you at all times.
