In today’s Archinest review, we explore House in Lapa, an architectural gem designed by Ricardo Bak Gordon, located in the historic Lapa neighborhood of Lisbon. Set on a narrow and elongated plot measuring just 7 by 26 meters, this house redefines urban residential design by blending modern architectural language with respect for its unique surroundings. Originally, this plot housed a small industrial pavilion that was completely cleared to make way for a stunning contemporary home that fully embraces the narrow layout.
The house façade is thoughtfully crafted, offering a glimpse into the residence’s internal spaces. A striking wooden grid at the ground level forms a ventilated, visually engaging entryway, merging indoor and outdoor spaces in a seamless transition. Moving through the house, we experience an open flow of light and air, thanks to a central patio accessible from a loggia lined with beautiful handmade tiles. This shared patio unites the two main volumes, inviting natural light into every corner and creating a serene, private oasis amidst the dense urban fabric.
Built using exposed concrete, green handmade tiles, anodized aluminum, and thermo-modified wood, House in Lapa radiates warmth and character. The rooftop provides spectacular views of the Tagus River, underscoring the home’s perfect integration into Lisbon’s iconic landscape. Each detail—from the carefully crafted materials to the layout’s attention to privacy and light—makes this home a unique answer to the challenges of constructing on a narrow lot while creating an environment that feels spacious, inviting, and intimately connected to the city.
Join us as we explore the innovation behind House in Lapa—an inspiring design that demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can transform even the tightest urban spaces into a modern sanctuary.
