For decades, drug overdose deaths were on the rise, driven by heroin, fentanyl and other substances. But recently, overdose deaths have dropped significantly. In this video, Ethan Chupp, a Gillings Communication Fellow, explores the reasons behind this remarkable decline with Nabarun Dasgupta, a street drug scientist at UNC’s Street Drug Analysis Lab. From Narcan saturation to changes in the drug supply patterns, Ethan uncovers what contributed to this crucial public health success and what still needs to be done.
Ethan Chupp served as a Gillings Communication Fellow from 2023 to 2025. He graduated with a Master of Public Health in Applied Epidemiology in 2025.
